Double Row Ball Bearings

Metric Light (200) Series Angular Contact - Shields Both Sides

Bearing Deflection and Bearing Design

From the shape and proportions of the contacting parts in a ball bearing and the laws governing their elastic deformation, it is understood that deflection, or relative movement, of the bearing components must have some influence upon the parts to be supported by the bearing.

Resistance to deflection in the bearings, with consequent reduction in the radial or axial movement permitted in the machine parts supported, may be achieved in two ways.  One of these is through the modification of bearing design and the other by means of preloading.  The former may best be illustrated by the Double Row Angular Contact bearing.

In this bearing, rigidity is made a fundamental characteristic primarily through the disposition of the contact angles, which are made to converge outside of the outer race.  Had the contact angles been reversed, however, so as to converge inside the bearing, a misaligning load applied at a given point on the shaft would result in much higher ball loads and consequently, greater deflection.  This is made sufficiently clear by the diagrams, in which the arrows indicate the direction and magnitude of the forces involved.  The relative deflections resulting are also indicated.

We have many different series of Double Row Ball Bearings Available!
